Fun day out in the beautiful historic town of Lewes

Where are the courses held?

They are held in a beautiful 300 year old timbered property. The building was once the home of Thackerys restaurant, where for many years cookery school proprietors Graham & Jaycee ran their highly successful restaurant. After Lewes was flooded back in 2000 they decided to restore the property back into a house where they now live and run their cookery school.

The property has a large open plan ground floor with dining and reception areas together with cloakroom facilities. To the rear there’s a semi-commercial kitchen which has been carefully designed to accommodate students, with hygienic stainless steel work surfaces together with ample amounts of equipment.

Type of courses available

GROUP COURSES; one and two day which can be purchased as a gift voucher, are the most popular. This is when you join in with others for a hands-on cookery course with a maximum of only four people per day. These courses are held most Fridays and Saturdays throughout the year, and can also be made available on other days of the week if requested. It is worth booking early as they do get booked up around six to eight weeks in advance, although if you do require something sooner it’s worth contacting them as they are sometimes able to fit people in at short notice. Group courses begin at 9.30am with a welcome tea or coffee. You will then be seated for a demonstration of the first two courses of your three course menu, during which time there will be food tastings and time to ask questions. Its then hands on into the kitchen to cook your own two course lunch to be enjoyed with a glass or two of good wine. During the final session it’s back to the kitchen to make at least four portions of a delicious dessert to take home. The course will end around 5.30pm when you will take home your dessert, all course recipes together with fond memories of your day.

DEMONSTRATION DAYS are a good introduction to Thackerys, when groups of four friends can come together for a fun filled day of demonstrations and food tastings with no hands on cooking (unless you want to help the chef). At the end of the demonstration you will all sit around the dinning table for a late lunch to enjoy the dishes demonstrated with a glass or two of good wine. Demonstration days begin at 10.00am and finish around 3.30pm. At the end of the day you will take home all the recipes demonstrated so that you can try them out and impress your family and friends.

ONE TO ONE TUTITION is held during the early part of the week, when the day will be totally bespoke to the students requirements. These are ideal for adults of all ages who perhaps may have never cooked or somebody who wants to brush up on their skills or even somebody who fancies a career in catering..
